Registering for healthcare in France

Starting from the beginning of the 2018-2019 academic year, the French student health insurance system will come to an end. From then on students will be covered by the general health insurance scheme.

How do you apply for membership in the general insurance scheme?

If you were already enrolled in a French higher education institution in 2017-2018, from 2018-2019 onwards you will no longer have to pay the €217 contribution for the student health insurance and you will still be covered by your current student insurance until the start of the 2019-2020 academic year.

If you were not enrolled in a French higher education institution during 2017-2018 and if you do not hold a European Health Insurance Card, you must register with the general health insurance scheme in order to be covered for your medical expenses. Registrations will be open as from 30th July 2018 and should be made only after you have enrolled at the University of Angers.

This procedure is COMPULSORY and FREE.

You may then sign up for additional health insurance for better reimbursement. This supplemental insurance is not compulsory but highly recommended. It will cover the remaining 30% of the medical expenses that are generally not covered by the compulsory health insurance.
