JPEMS - University of Angers

JPEMS

JPEMS, see you next year!

The first international medical semester called JPEMS ended December 16 with a closing ceremony at the Faculty of medicine. Students and teachers welcomed the successful launch of this program taught only in English. The experience will be continued next year, hosted by the University of Nantes.

A closing ceremony brought together the class -37 students from Europe, but also including students from China and Mexico- and their teachers. The students are now back home. Vincent Procaccio -course coordinator- has praised the involvement of the students. This program, designed to encourage students to become « actors » during courses, should continue in this way. "We want to reduce the number of core lectures and increase practical work and small groups tutorials", explained Vincent Procaccio. Students will study on their own beforehand so that lessons are more productive and interactive. Vlad Bura, from Cluj University in Romania, appreciated this aspect and also “teaching” other students through student presentations. As a result, the students have improved their English and have become more confident.

Work experience

Students tackled medical research during a 5-week research placement. “I joined a virology laboratory in Nantes where I worked on HIV”, indicated Marie Otekpo, from the University of Nantes. She didn’t get the expected results because of time constraints but it was not the objective. “Students had to acquaint themselves with scientific reasoning: formulating a hypothesis, applying the right method”, explains Vincent Procaccio. Vlad Bura, in the Mitochondrial and Neurovascular Biology Laboratory,  learnt to manipulate and culture cells and carried research experiments by himself with the help of researchers. This Romanian student likes research but also wants to be a clinician in order to remain in contact with patients.
Final exams followed the lab experience. All have successfully passed and got a certificate of attendance with their final marks. Their home university will be in charge of validating this Erasmus semester.

It is good to see that teachers are utilizing practical learning techniques instead of pure theory methods, by which this knowledge has been gained.

The impact of the wider economic situation is visible almost everywhere. We need to change the learning methods if we want our next generation be able to cope with the difficulties that block our path to prosperity.
