Health Insurance

Lire ce texte en français

Health insurance is compulsory in France.

European students

- You must bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). If the dates indicated on the EHIC do not cover the entire stay in France, your registration to the French Social Security is compulsory.

- If you go to the doctor’s, you must pay directly the GP consultation and the medicines.

To get a refund on your medical care, you have two possibilities:

1. Send directly to your health insurance company of your home country:

  • your treatment form (which you will obtain from your doctor)
  • your bills and receipts of payment

2. Send the following documents to the (Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie = French healthcare system):

  • a feuille de soins (treatment form) which you will obtain from your doctor
  • a photocopy of your European health card
  • a R.I.B (relevé d'identité bancaire - bank account information form)
  • a photocopy of your student ID card

NOTE :

- The CPAM can reimburse about 70% of your health expenses.

- The student health social security centres SMEBA or LMDE can offer a complementary health insurance policy which covering the remaining 25% to 30% of your medical care. Registering for a complementary health insurance is not compulsory but highly advised especially in cases of hospitalisation. You will find all the information about prices and contracts from the SMEBA and LMDE.

Non-European students

- If you are under the age of 28 and if you are staying in France for more than three months, you must register and pay for the student social security scheme at your University department even if you are covered by your home country's insurance.

When filling in the administrative forms at the secretary of your University department, you will be asked to:
