English semester | Joint Program for European Medical Studies (JPEMS)

The unique experience of a European medical curriculum in an international context

Coordinated by the University of Angers (FRANCE) and the University of Nantes (NANTES)
In cooperation with the universities of: Szeged, Tours, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Naples, and Amsterdam.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This semester of pre-clinical instruction, centred on biological sciences and research issues, is implemented by a consortium of European universities from Szeged (Hungary), Nantes (France), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Naples (Italy) and Timisoara (Romania).

It includes a full-time research placement in a research laboratory and it will be fully credited within the home-institution curriculum for all students.

JPEMS is open to all French and foreign students from our consortium who are enrolled in a medical curriculum and keen on discovering France.

The objective is to offer French and foreign students the opportunity: :

  • to have an overview of European medicine taught by renowned visiting Professors
  • to benefit from a large European network useful for early exposure to research
  • to learn medical English or/and French from doctors with international careers
  • to increase their own employability in international organisations

An international staff from all partner institutions will be constantly involved in the design of the curriculum, in the elaboration of course and evaluation materials but also in medical teaching and medical research. Courses will be given by visiting professors via video-conference sessions.

In this program:

  • Small group tutorials
  • Several video-conferences per week
  • Laboratory work
  • 5 weeks' research placement

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Topics to be covered are listed below.Teachers from partner universities will be teaching the following courses (30 ECTS):

  • Physiopathology, pathology and molecular medicine
  • Microbiology
  • Medical genetics
  • Immunopathology
  • Medical informatics and biostatistics
  • Medical English or medical French
  • Elective module, to fit each curriculum
  • Full time research placement (5 weeks), tailored to the requirements of each curriculum

Admission criteria
The selection of students will be made on the basis of their stated motivation, their English proficiency and their academic record.

JPEMS is available both in Angers and in Nantes.

Angers is the historical, political and economic chief town of the Anjou region and the 16th largest city in France. It is located in western France close to the Loire Valley, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and famous for its many châteaux and wines. Angers has a unique 13th century fortress which overlooks the Maine River and the world’s largest medieval tapestry. With more than 30,000 students every year, it offers a very dynamic lifestyle with frequent cultural exhibitions and festivals all year round. The city hosts two universities and several highly specialized research centres. In 2006 Angers was ranked one of the most business-friendly cities in France. Angers Medical School is close to the University Hospital Centre (CHU) and to the INSERM and CNRS laboratories.

Nantes, the 6th largest city in France, is located on the Loire   estuary some thirty miles from the Atlantic coast and two hours from Paris. As a major centre for higher education and research in Western France, the Université de Nantes is one of France’s top multidisciplinary universities with 45,200 registered students every year. It is located in an attractive area boasting strong economic and demographic growth over the past two decades. Its Medical School is located in Nantes city centre (next to the public hospital), with facilities offered to students such as a medical library and a student restaurant.
